Abstract

This study explores the concept of disability in the Qur’an through the lens of Paul Ricoeur’s philosophical hermeneutics, focusing on the tension between physical reality and spiritual symbolism. The Qur’anic terms such as a‘m? (blind), a?amm (deaf), abkam (mute), a‘raj (lame), and mar?? (sick) do not merely denote physical impairments but also function as symbolic representations of deeper moral and theological conditions. Employing Ricoeur’s threefold hermeneutic model—(prefiguration), (configuration of the text), and (refiguration in contemporary understanding)—this research reveals multiple layers of meaning embedded within Qur’anic discourse. The findings indicate that the Qur’an does not stigmatize individuals with physical disabilities; rather, it emphasizes values of inclusion, empathy, and justice. Disabilities in the text often symbolize spiritual blindness, moral obstinacy, and denial of truth, without conflating such states with physical impairments. This underscores the need to distinguish between literal and metaphorical meanings in Qur’anic interpretation. The study concludes that an ethical and humanistic approach to the Qur’an is crucial for promoting disability-inclusive religious thought and for challenging inherited theological biases. It also encourages contextualized interpretations that resonate with contemporary human rights and social justice frameworks.
