This article examines the concept of lowering the gaze from the Qur’anic perspective, focusing on an analysis of QS. an-N?r verses 30–31 as the foundation of Islamic social ethics. The study aims to elucidate the normative structure, historical context, and moral-social functions of the commands to lower the gaze, safeguard chastity, wear the khim?r, and observe modest dress. This research employs a library-based qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach and thematic-analytical Qur’anic exegesis. Primary sources include the Qur’an and classical as well as contemporary tafs?r works, while secondary sources consist of scholarly books and peer-reviewed journal articles. The findings indicate that the command to lower the gaze serves as a preventive ethical mechanism in Islam, functioning to protect human dignity, restrain moral deviation, and maintain social order. Visual ethics and dress codes articulated in QS. an-N?r 30–31 extend beyond personal piety and reflect an integrated framework of moral, spiritual, and social values. Consequently, the Qur’anic ethic of lowering the gaze remains normatively and contextually relevant in addressing contemporary moral challenges.
