Abstract

This article examines the methodological distinction between Ushul al-Fiqh and Ushul al-Tafsir and its implications for interpreting Qur’anic texts. Although both disciplines engage with revelation, their differences in epistemological orientation, objects of study, analytical approaches, and scholarly outputs are often overlooked, resulting in methodological inconsistencies in Qur’anic exegesis and Islamic legal reasoning. This study aims to clarify the methodological boundaries of both disciplines and to formulate an appropriate integrative model for understanding Qur’anic legal verses. Using a qualitative library-based approach, this research analyzes classical works alongside contemporary studies published within the last five years. The findings indicate that applying Ushul al-Fiqh to non-legal verses may reduce the Qur’an’s moral and theological messages, while interpreting legal verses solely through Ushul al-Tafsir without juridical principles risks normative relativism. The novelty of this study lies in proposing a hierarchical integrative model in which Ushul al-Tafsir functions as the initial stage of meaning construction and Ushul al-Fiqh serves as the mechanism for determining legal consequences, offering an explicit and replicable methodological framework for contemporary Qur’anic and Islamic legal studies.
