The development of the concept of self-development across various disciplines has received increasing attention as an effort to enhance individual well-being and quality of life. However, many existing approaches remain predominantly oriented toward psychological dimensions and worldly achievement, and therefore have not fully incorporated the spiritual dimension. In this regard, the Qur’an offers the concept of tazkiyatun nafs, understood as a process of purifying the soul that serves as a foundation for character formation and the holistic development of human potential. This study aims to analyze the concept of tazkiyatun nafs in the Qur’an through a thematic (maudhu’i) exegesis approach and to examine its relevance to the concept of self-development. This study employs a qualitative method using library research. Data were collected through documentation of relevant Qur’anic verses, works of Qur’anic exegesis, hadith literature, and relevant scholarly sources. The data were then analyzed using content analysis within the framework of thematic Qur’anic interpretation. The findings indicate that tazkiyatun nafs constitutes a process of spiritual purification encompassing the strengthening of faith, regulation of desires, cultivation of moral character, development of self-awareness, and optimization of human potential. This concept is closely relevant to several dimensions of self-development, including self-awareness, self-regulation, character development, and self-actualization. Nevertheless, tazkiyatun nafs offers a more comprehensive orientation by integrating personal development with the pursuit of balance between worldly and spiritual success. Future research is encouraged to conduct empirical studies examining the implementation of tazkiyatun nafs-based self-development models in educational, psychological, and human resource development contexts.
